Another stretch of New Cut walls to be investigated

We’re received another update from the Transport Engagement team at Bristol City Council, this time concerning the New Cut walls along Coronation Road between Southville Service Station and Camden Road. It’s a stretch that is in serious need to stabilisation. The email reads:

“We’re contacting you with an update on some work that will be starting next week that is part of our ongoing project to stabilise the historic river walls along the New Cut.

From Monday 23 February work will start to remove sections of vegetation from the riverbank that runs along Coronation Road between Southville Service Station and just east of Camden Road.

With guidance from an ecologist, we need to remove twenty 2m strips of vegetation along the riverbank. This is in preparation to do ground investigations so we can design plans to stabilise the river wall along this section of Coronation Road. The designs will be formulated by structural engineers and with consultation with stakeholders such as the Environment Agency and flood defence team.

We won’t be removing any trees as part of these investigatory works.

Coronation Road will remain open throughout the works, but small sections of pavement and cycle lane will be temporarily closed to allow the work to take place safely.

The work is programmed to take up to two weeks, but we’re aiming to finish before then.

The ground investigations will take place later this year and we hope to start the long-term stabilisation works in late 2026.

We will keep you updated as these longer-term works are programmed in.”
