It’s all about the south bank

The New Cut river walls stabilisation works continue and we have received updates from Bristol City Council about two south bank sections.

Coronation Road

Investigatory works are taking place to the embankment alongside Coronation Road – from Bristol Metal Spraying next to Walter Street at the western end to just beyond Camden Road at the eastern end.

To carry out the work safely, the council has temporarily closed a section of Coronation Road, and is using temporary traffic lights to keep two-way traffic moving.

As the ground investigations move further along the embankment, access to vehicles travelling from Cooperage Lane and Beauley Road onto Coronation Road will need to close as will some parking bays.

The work is being done to determine the ground composition and types of river wall failures, so that appropriate stabilisation measures can be designed. These initial works should be completed in early September.

Following this, structural engineers will start designing various types of stabilisation solutions, with the main stabilisation work expected to get underway in early 2027.

The website at www.bristol.gov.uk/newcutriverwalls has been updated to reflect this latest update.

York Road

In one of the final phases of the York Road river wall stabilisation project, part of York Road and St Luke’s Road will close in both directions overnight so they can be resurfaced at the end of August.

The resurfacing work will take place on York Road, between just after its junction with Spring Street to just before the petrol station, and on St Luke’s Road, from where it meets York Road up to just before its junction with Mead Street.

It means these parts of road will be closed overnight on Thursday 27 and Friday 28 August and on Tuesday 1, Wednesday 2 and Thursday 3 September between 8pm to 6am.

Overnight access for pedestrians and cyclists will be maintained, but drivers will need to follow the signposted diversion via: York Road, Bedminster Bridges Roundabout, Clarence Road, Bath Bridges Roundabout and back onto York Road and in reverse.

The 24-hour Shell petrol station on York Road will remain open overnight and accessible via Bath Road’s entry onto York Road.

During the day throughout the resurfacing works, York Road will reopen one-way heading from Bath Bridges Roundabout towards Bedminster Bridges Roundabout. There will be no right turn from both St Luke’s Road and Spring Street onto York Road. However, there will be two-way traffic between Bath Bridges Roundabout and the petrol station on York Road.

York Road will reopen fully from 6am on Friday 4 September.
